Continued. The King led Jia Xu and Xun Yu into his private residence and into a small room only fit for intimate meetings between close advisors and the King personally. His personal study, it was flickering with candlelight that just barely illuminated the room enough for it to be made out in the darkness of the night. At the head of the room was the King's desk, a couch covered in cushions stood behind it as a comfortable spot for the King. Before the desk there was a long couch at an angle facing the corner of the room where guests may sit and many scrolls snacked on a large rack that spanned the length of one wall behind it. Taking his seat at the head of the room behind his desk Cao brought his advisors into the room to be seated. He gestured towards the couch as he sat, it could hold up to four people with a squeeze, so two would be no problem. The King's attendant brought in three flasks of weak wine incase they became thirsty and was dismissed for the night, off he went to sleep. Setting his flask on the side table the Cao spoke, "Gentlemen, today Zhang Liao returned from the eastern front with a envoy from Wu. Sun Shang Xiang, sister of Sun Quan and a wife of Liu Bei. Why Zhang had to escort such an individual personally I can guess." Cao smiled faintly. "What brought her to the capital shocked me, two things." Cao paused for a moment allowing his two advisors to follow him. "She desires to destroy Wu and Shu, both she is related to, bound by family and marriage; while here in the north she has no ties. She also revealed by mistake a new turn her brother was about to take. Sun Quan is going to declare himself Emperor."After a lengthy pause Cao finally asked, "She was quite distressed about many things which I can't begin to understand as she did not go into the details; she spoke of being betrayed by Shu and undermined by Wu. I personally believe the news she brought. Should I be?""You two have been in my service for many years and are two of the most brilliant minds of our time, please enlighten me with your views."

Xun walked with Jia Xu to where Cao had lead them too. He had been in the room a couple times back when he was younger under his service. When Cao gestured the couch to be seated at, he bowed and sat down.
Xun took the drink from the attendant. He thanked him, and took a small sip.
When he listened to the king, Xun lead only to scratch his head. He never heard of someone trying to seek to destroy both kingdoms at the same time. He then spoke when he told them to enlighten him with Jia and Xun's views.. "My King," he said. "it sounds like Sun Shang wishes to join us don't you think? But if we do, who knows what she may do. She may destroy us as well. But that's beyond the subject. In my opinion, you shouldn't be worried, but you should keep a close eye on her. Who knows, this may be merely a trap to open up a hole for either Wu or Shu to destroy us."
When Xun also heard about Sun Quan rising to become Emperor, he then paused and then spoke once again.
"...Sun Quan rising as emperor is a big mistake indeed." Xun spoke. "He doesn't sound like a leader worthy enough to be an Emperor as his brother or his father."

Jia Xu had followed Cao Cao to the residency where the midnight meeting would take place. They had been given weak wine, food and reports, detailing the events that had taken place between Sun Shang Xiang and Zhang Liao. Most of the writings were unnecessary, detailing any random point or event, regardless of their accuracy, and Cao Cao himself rose to attention once or twice to put in detail the more specific events that had transpired. In the end, it was more of a dilemma than an issue regarding stratagem.
And he was not too good with moral dilemmas.
He would try though. He flicked his wrist, threw out his rune sticks and watched the patterns and the shapes form when they landed. He could see three shapes in the mixed splatter and then sighed uneasily, for it spoke of a mixed omen, and a mixed opinion.
He lent to pick up the rune sticks and placed them neatly in his pocket, and then turned to Xun Yu – suggesting with a nod that he would follow suit once the man had finished talking. He had spoken rightly so, but had been brief and to the point. And that was something Jia Xu had never done. He spent his time forming scenarios in which he would try to destroy or find weakness in, and only when he felt sure that a plan was theoretically flawless would he jump forward and sprout the words coming to his mind.
"My Lord, they say blood runs thicker than water, and with such little knowledge gained from this, princess – how are we to expect truth?"
He motioned with his hand a gesture of unease, a slippery slope which usually was the difference between a victory and a defeat, and then went for the wine that had caught his eye. It had tasted weak and overly bitter, but he had gulped it down eagerly and wiped at the edges of his mouth once he was done.
"A woman married to Shu and bound in blood to Wu arrives at the feet of our large kingdom, speaking of crazed plots and ideas to destroy things beyond her power, and we are to what? Respect her, believe her?" He laughed at the idea, "The poisoned tongues of women have often sought the lives of foolish and rash men in the past, it would be unwise to listen to what she suggests, whether she hates them or not – what use do we have for an over-glorified warrior princess who has shown nothing but the ability to spread her legs for the northern generals of Wei?"
He sighed as he finished, gulping more wine from his golden goblet. He spoke harshly, and he knew he had not spoken with the poetic ease of a strategist, or with the over confidence often used by preachers, but then when beyond the ears of the others, why bother with accented speech, why layer and decorate words that are much more efficient when spoken truthfully and directly?
There was no reason, ans so he did not make one. He simply said what he had meant to say regarding Sun Shang, and turned to the other subject at hand. Sun Quan.
"Whether," he began, "we believe Sun Shang is irrelevant, should Sun Quan succeed what do you think would happen? Would new large armies rise in rebellion against the Han, or would we treat the threat as we did Cheng, and utterly destroy it? The title of emperor has always been but a name, it is the power, and the symbol of peace, of hope that makes it worth while, and whilst you rule the north, whilst we have land and resources – the people of our territory will stay and they will fight. The Southland is too small to compete directly, even if they become a dynasty or not – it makes no difference to their political, economic or military strengths. Sun Quan and Liu Bei might as well be emperors right now, for realistically what are they, if not masters of their own domain?"

Cao Cao sat in silence hearing out the views of both advisors, Xun Yu and then Jia Xu, before replying venturing to reply. He replied to them both at once.
"I plan to question the princess more thoroughly in the morning, she was unapproachable earlier, too nervous and distressed." Cao said falling back into the couch, still seated.
He continued with a sigh, "She avoided any direct answers and seemed to avoid getting to the point of any plan, or idea that would see her proposals done. Her evasive conversing makes me suspicious. But, I don't want to be. I want to believe her."
Cao tapped the table in front of him with fingers on his right hand in momentary reflection. He had thought before that Sun Quan had sent her as his envoy on purpose, but he apprently never meant for her to come to Xuchang. Zhang Liao had the southland in terror, maybe it was only to soften his resolve and lower his guard? Cao muttered his next thoughts aloud, "Hefei. Hefei..."
Sitting forward again he said, "I can't help but think of Hefei. The suspicious part of me worries about the defences because she is here..."
He shook his head and continued, "As for Sun Quan and Liu Bei becoming Emperor they are foolish as Wenruo said of Sun to assume the title. For one's who have prided themselves in fighting to destroy a 'traitor' to the Han they would alienate some loyalist support to think of such things."
"Even I, who have the diminishing Han in my fist do not be so absurd as to demolish it forever. I couldn't bear to. All of our clans have received the bounty of the Han, to personally erase it from existence is dishonourable."
"I wouldn't expect Xuande to do such a thing. I would expect him to turn against Wu if Sun Quan does indeed plan to establish his own dynasty. He would use it as justification to wage war against me if I did take that last step s Sun plans to."
Cao turned to Jia Xu overturning the subject to one that just hit him, "You mentioned something about that bitch sleeping with our generals? What game is she trying to play? Who? When?"
Cao asked but he already had a brief idea of who, flashes of memory came into mind of Sun Shang Xiang and Zhang Liao, their behaviour. The man was smitten. Why Zhang Liao? Fucking Hefei, the suspicions all roared back into his mind like a tidal wave. Cao could only hope he was wrong.

Jia shuddered at the thought of Zhang Liao bedding Sun Shang; of all the women to love, and to, in turn – receive love, Sun Shang was the worst, and the thought of uniting the two houses of Shu and Wei sickened him even more than the conversation that was taking place.
"This is absurd." He muttered, though loud enough for the others to overhear. "Why are we concerning ourselves with the ethics of emperorship. What are Sun Quan and Liu Bei, if not hands of their emperor, we all know they claim us to be the traitors – and in turn, we accuse them of being the traitors. Who declares what is irrelevant, in terms of military strength, being an emperor grants you nothing. Actions speak louder than mere words, it would be wise to remember that"
He sighed, not at Cao Cao, but at the fact that he needed to say such. He felt disappointed and let down, especially in the way Cao Cao had agonised over such trivial matters.
"It is also irrelevant what you believe, or in fact- what lady Sun declares. Unless she provides factual evidence, rather than mere word – what are we supposed to do with it. She is the bitch who was thrown out of Wu to serve Shu and now she is with Zhang, whether she beds him or not I do not know, but it seems highly likely that she is...she is after all – a dishonourable spouse."
He gazed to the floor, and then back to the table. He took another gulp of wine, finishing his goblet, "Keep her close, or do as I would, and dispose of her once you have learned all you can." He stood up from the couch and moved over to the table, where more wine was placed. "She cannot be trusted by blood or through the bond and oath of marriage, if she defies the two strongest bonds in life – why should we waste our breath on her excuses. Liu Bei is not known to be cruel, and Sun Quan is not known to be savage, after all – he dots heavily on his mother, and his mother in turn, dots heavily on lady sun. She is a fickle, sly creature....we don't need people like that driving wedges in walls where none are needed."

Xun Yu listened to Jia Xu and was about to say something, but, Xun Yu would sip his wine, and speak very minimum, since he needed time to think. He then looked at Jia Xu again, but this time, was ready to respond. "I agree with you, Jia, he said. but Sun Shang may actually help to be proven useful. If more than anything, to help the two kingdoms to fight eachother.
He then turned to Cao Cao. "My lord, with all due respect, Lady Sun should stay here until the time is right for when the two factions become weak in a battle. The only things we have to concern ourselves is with Zhuge Liang and the defenses of Wu."
((Sorry if this is rushed. I am quite busy with homework.))

The King was quick to reply, "Actions speak louder than words? A bit of a cliche don't you think Wenhe?" Cao joked of course and followed up a moment later. "What is becoming Emperor if not taking action? We all know the Han has expired it's only a matter of time before someone does assume the throne. Yuan Shu was foolish enough to attempt it when the Han was still established and had many loyal retainers who would serve the dynasty until death."
"Now such retainers are rare, loyalists still exist I'm sure we all are loyal to different extents, but loyalty there still is to the Han. But not enough to see it restored now. The dynasty has failed. But whoever rises as Emperor first, will effectively set his rivals against him, justification for war."
"Liu Bei talks of the Han, and seeks to restore it, though I do not believe he will the same it was. The Han system needs a rennovation the times have changed."
Cao hand raised to stroke his beard as he said finally, "I'm not going to oppose Sun Quan's decision. I want him and Liu Bei to tear each other apart. If Liu Bei is as honourable as he says and his loyalty is still one with the Han then he will march against Wu and beat them into the Eastern Sea."
Cao changed the topic back to Sun Shang Xiang, "As for Miss Sun, I only hope that she has not confused the loyalties of Wenyuan. I trust to put his duty before this woman. For his, and my sake. I won't have her ripping apart the pillars of my kingdom."
"I will be having another interview with her soon and I will find out her true intentions. I would like both of you to be present in court at that time."
"She claimed it was not Xuande who wronged her but those in his service, she is still partial to him. A dangerous thing. But I cannot decide what to do with her yet, perhaps after banging one of my top generals she might feel good enough to actually tell me something useful."
To Xun Yu he commented in conclusion. "If Zhuge Liang sallies forth then I have a chance to get some revenge. Shouchun is safe. Zhang left Yue Jin and Li Dian in charge of the new castle, if five-hundred men can halt Sun Quan's personal advance the region is forever safe."

"It is true." Jia Said, "The Han still has its retainers, but I do not feel it is because of its loyalists that it exists. For was it not you, along with Liu Bei, that squashed Yuan Shu? Was it not a perfect opportunity for you, my lord, to force a man's hand, to have the blade of another sweep at the feet of your enemies?"
He smiled at the thought, the thought of using and manipulating those around him, but he could not picture it clearly. He had known about the incident regarding Cheng, and how Cao Cao had persuaded the loyal retainer of Liu to strike on his behalf, but things had changed then – a status quo had emerged, and so long as it stood nothing would change, no armies would march.
"Zhuge Liang is no fool." He said after a pause, "Zhuge Liang will most likely pardon Sun Quan, he would claim that his act of bravado in the declaration was but a means to an end to face the armies of lord Cao Cao. With the status quo at hand, not even Liu Bei would rise against Sun Quan, for if they did their resources would be spent, and the greater traitor would emerge the victor."
He returned to his seat, troubled. He knew that the declaration meant nothing, but Cao Cao was right, if it was possible to use the act for justification of war than surely it would be worth while, but Liu Bei could never accept such terms, not unless he was stupid, and he had heard no such thing in his many years of living.
"There is no easy way about it my lord." He concluded, and then simply sighed. "But I would not fear Zhang Liao's loyalty, he did your house proud, and I see many great things in stall for a man as capable as he. Sima Yi sees it too."
He was able to smile at that, for although Wei were the traitors, and the common enemy, they still boasted the best generals. "I will be present at the council, but I would not put faith in the warrior princess, she..."
He paused for a moment, forgetting about the woman, and began cradling the rune sticks in his hand. He threw them to the ground, between both men, and watched the spiral pattern emerge as the sticks interlocked and lapped.
"She brings no good fortune to the house of Cao."

((Skipping Xun's turn, done waiting.)) Cao smiled at Jia Xu's assessment and replied with words of confidence. "But Zhuge Liang is stationed in Xinye on our border, how is he to once again pardon Wu on behalf of his lord when he is so far from Liu Bei? I don't think he can persuade Xuande to sponge all of Wu's abuse forever, there is a limit to that man and it will be a great day when he finally reaches that limit.""Liu Bei has set himself a myriad of principles to follow, if he forsakes this fundamental one of his, to restore and avenge the wrongs the Han suffers - how will he maintain the trust and support he enjoys today?"Cao nodded and sighed, "I hope you are right about Zhang Liao. But, I have seen many a man ruined by the devices of women in my lifetime. I can't help but consider the awful prospect that it could even happen to one of my own loyal retainers."The King too had considered the potential of Sun Shang Xiang's ploy if that's what you could call a plan that she had never given details of. It could leave him stronger, a further augmented place in the country, but he trusted his instinct that she would grow distant as time grew on and would stray back to either Shu or Wu. To either her husband, or her clan, it would be only natural, he would have to wait and see. Jia Xu cast his runes to the ground and gave his divination, "Oh, how I hope you are wrong this time Wenhe, but my heart believes you." Cao said regrettably, he hoped the rune sticks were wrong, but he didn't believe they would be, if he said he did, he would be lying.

Xun Yu looked a bit confused over Jia Xu's rune stick prediction, but he stood quiet, deep into thought. He looked at the two men with has hands both on eachother. He didn't said a word at all. Deep in thought, Wenruo then thought of Zhuge Liang. Could he be behind all of this? No, thats foolishness.
Xun only kept his mouth shut to retain his foolish thought about that, and followed along with Jia and Cao. "Liu Bei is very protective over his people, that is why he gets angry for them." He then took out his dagger and threw it up and down. "As for Shang Xiang, I don't know. Shes just a woman, I mean sure, we have several intelligent women on our side, but Shang Xiang only brings trouble to this kingdom."
