Growing up, she was taught to play music, write, and read the Chinese classics. She grew into an intelligent, beautiful and humble young woman. Her father was very good friends with Liu Yan and her brother, Wu Yi, was a minister of Liu Yan's youngest son, Liu Zhang.
When Liu Yan was made governer, Wu Qiang's father followed him to Yi Province and she along with her siblings were taken with him. One day, Liu Yan had heard that a fortune-teller predicted great fortune for Lady Wu. After hearing this, he decided to marry her to his third son, Liu Mao. Wu Qiang was married at the age of twenty-one. Unfortunately, before she could turn twenty three, her husband died of illness and Wu Qiang was left a widow and did not remarry for sometime.
Having conquering Yi Province in 214, Liu Bei had effectively divorced his wife, Lady Sun Shang Xiang, the sister of Sun Quan. All of Liu Bei's wives had passed away and Lady Sun returned to her home town. His advisor, Fa Zheng advised him to seek another consort so that things within the palace could be correctly ordered. Fa Zheng had also heard of Lady Wu's predicted fortune and recommended Liu Bei to take her as his wife. However, Liu Bei was afraid that he would be committing incest as the late Liu Mao was of the same Han imperial line as him.
Fa Zheng argued that Lady Wu Qiang was nowhere near a kinswoman as the Duke Duke Wen of Jin took Lady Huai Ying as his wife. Liu Bei thus took Lady Wu as his consort and made her his new wife in AD 214-215 and gave her the courtesy name, Zhende, 'Upright Virtue'. Now AD 219, Liu Bei claimed himself the tittle of the King of Hanzhong and made Lady Wu his Queen.
