History:
Sun Zhiyun was born to Sun Tung, a peasant fisherman in Jingzhou. Sun Tung and his family were descendants of the ancient military genius Sun T'zu, but their bloodline had long since been seperated from that of the noble Sun Clan led by great men such as Sun Jian and Sun Ce. They shared a common ancestor, but no blood.
Sun Tung married young and had many children. Sun Yuan Ci was the youngest of three sons and two daughters. His brothers, eldest Sun Xiong and second son Sun T'sen, were raised as fisherman, but his father taught them what little he knew as a common soldier. He could use a blade and was disciplined in ranks but knew nothing of strategy.
When Zhiyun was born, he was raised with his sisters, who were both closer to his age. When his brothers were sparring with wooden swords, Sun Yuan Ci was crafting nets, and once he was done, he returned to the cottage while his father took Xiong and T'sen to work. At this time, Sun Yuan Ci took to his Di Zi, and over the years, became a rather talented musician.
Simple life in times of peace would suffice, but the heavens had a different destiny for the youn Zhiyun. Bandits rose to prominince in the area and would rob Sun Tung of all his hard work, thus he became poor. When a resistance sparked, Sun Tung took his two oldest sons with him to fight. They left one autumn night, and Zhiyun would set his chair facing east, playing his Di Zi until the sunrise each day as he awaited his kin's safe return.
One morning, he saw a small group of riders approaching. He stood as they approached, and he noticed his two brothers. They stopped a few hundred paces away, dismounted, and from another horse they helped a wounded man off. Sun Tung had been struck by an arrow, and he was dying. At his bedside that night, Zhiyun helped take care of his father by bringing water for wounds and to drink, but it was of no help, as the wound was mortally struck. Sun Tung died, but not after telling his youngest son that he saw the most potential in him despite his soft childhood. When his father died, Sun Zhiyun was only 12 years old.
As Zhiyun walked outside to bury his father with his mother and siblings, another rider approached with a band of armed horsemen. This man was Po Jin, a nobleman of Jingzhou and the holder of the seal He Who Destroys Brigands, granted by the emperor. He took with him Sun Xiong and Sun T'sen, of whom were 20 and 18 respectively, to serve in Jing's army, and he sent Sun Zhiyun to his cousin to be taught. Po Jin was a childhood friend of Sun Tung, and became his commander in military affairs, and in the simple fisherman's death, he would not forsake his family. Zhiyun's mother and daughters were sent to Xiang Yang and taken care of.
Sun Yuan Ci came upon a small cottage in a mountain when his escort took leave, and he entered to meet the man he was sent to learn from. Po Ling was a tall man with a beard that fell to his waist. In a short manner of time, he had proven to be a worthy teacher and thus Sun Yuan Ci pledged the remainder of his years to his teachings. He learned with other great minds, and was also taught martial arts, and in a few years time, he had risen above the rest as Po Ling's star pupil along with the illustrious Ba Zeng, who had become one of Zhiyun's most cherished friends.
When Zhiyun was 20, Po Jin returned to take him under his wing, and then he was reunited with Sun Xiong and Sun T'sen, who had become recognized soldiers for their service, and Sun Yuan Ci joined them in their battles. He gained an immediate interest from his commanders when in his first battle he took his spear and charged into enemy lines, keeping waves at bay with swift and wide strokes of his spear, felling any that strayed too close.
Two years passed with Sun Zhiyun serving Po Jin, who passed away from a wound. His son, Po Ang, took command of the army, and his finest vassals were Sun Xiong, Sun T'sen, and Sun Yuan Ci. But Zhiyun thought that their progress was too slow, and so he was granted a few hundred men by Po Ang, who had become his closest friend and sworn brother, and he roamed the land offering service to honorable warlords when he could, destroying bands of rebels and pirates, or offering council to those who seeked advice. His plans won many small matters in courts and war, but it was his blade that was most desireable. Despite this, he desired to stray from service to the Han or any of its protectors.
He was a loyal servant, but he did not seek to become a military officer. Two more years passed and he remained a mysterious warrior with a glorious mind who avoided retaining within the service of one lord for too long.
Current Information: Sun Yuan Ci holds a small band of soldiers loyal to him, but he currently serves no lord. His loyalties currently lie to the Han, and to his brothers and their soldiers in Jingzhou.
